Understanding What COPD is, Causes and Symptoms
Define What COPD is: Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a lung disease in which the lung is damaged, making it hard to breathe, a long term, chronic condition in which the tubes that carry air in and out of your lungs, commonly called the airways get partly obstructed, making the passage of air through the lungs during respiration difficult. It is commonly associated with two main conditions, emphysema and chronic bronchitis.
What Causes COPD: Cigarette smoking, air pollution and long-term exposure to many other lung irritants.
Symptoms of COPD: Common COPD symptoms: chest tightness, dyspnea (shortness of breath), fatigue, hemoptysis (coughing up blood), persistent lung infections (pneumonia), chronic mucus production and increasing morning headaches. Severe COPD symptoms: cyanosis (blue skin color), edema (fluid retention in legs and feet) and bloated abdomen.
